2022 Flooding
The long road to recovery…
Through the help of the local community, family and friends, who donated their time, effort and money, we are committed to restoring the farm to even better shape than it was before. As saddening as it was to see the farm go under water the hope that followed it was in many ways even more overwhelming to witness. Our sincerest thanks go out to everyone who has supported us through these times.
Record breaking floods.
In October of 2022 the farm was hit by the largest flood in centuries. The vegetables drowned under water for around four days ending the spring harvest completely as well as destroying critical farm infrastructure.
As the waters continued to rise, Chloe carries crates in which we would soon use to kayak the chickens to safety. Looking back at the farm in that moment it was difficult to know what the damage would be. The water came up too quickly and unexpectedly to batten down equipment, infrastructure or tools. Our priority was to get the animals and ourselves safe which we are thankful that we were able to.
After sitting under water for so long and silt continuously washing over the farm lost most of its colour, taking on a bizarre sepia tone. Most of the crops were lost, entire garlic harvests wiped out, all the annuals wasted. Fortunately we should be able to recover many of the perennial crops like the Rhubarb, asparagus, artichokes and woody herbs. Interestingly, the lemon sorrel almost looks healthier after the flooding.
From little things, big things grow.
We would like to say a huge thank you, from the bottom of our hearts, to everyone who has supported us and leant a hand. Your love keeps us going and will be the foundation and soil from which my business will sprout and grow again.
Until then…we’ll just keep smiling!
